Room by Room calculations are used when you’re adding mini-splits, as in this case, we need to know the individual room load and CFM. They can also be used when you plan to add duct design in the future, but you haven’t reached this stage yet. While a Room by Room design can be transitioned to a Manual D (Duct design), a Blockload Manual JS can’t, as it’s missing the individual room load.
Block load calculations are perfect for jobs where permits require a Manual J, but you’re only swapping the equipment. They make your life simple, and as we don’t have to design the whole house Room by Room, they’re more cost-effective.

If you don't have official floor plans, you can always create a hand drawing (as shown on this drawing), but I urge you to double-check all measurements, as people often miscalculate the measurements. In this case, Graph paper will be your best friend.

Yes, it can. Most jurisdictions require these calculations to obtain a Permit to start construction.
No, a Blockload can’t be upgraded to a Manual D (duct design), as Manual D needs the individual room load requirements. If you plan to add a duct design in the near future, please place an order for a Room by Room Manual JS.
